What is a Gemba Expert and why it is essential for Lean organizations

Gemba (現場) experts are people who specialize in working on and with the gemba. What exactly is Gemba? It's a Japanese term that literally means "the actual place," or: the place where the work actually happens (the shop floor, operations, practice).

In Lean, gemba revolves around the principle: go and see where the work happens instead of just relying on reports or assumptions.

What does a Gemba expert do?

A Gemba expert helps organizations better understand processes by:

  • observing on the shop floor themselves;
  • speaking with employees who perform the work;
  • directly identifying bottlenecks, waste, and improvement opportunities;
  • guiding teams in improving their processes.

What are their strengths?

Gemba experts often combine:

  • Lean knowledge (such as recognizing muda, mura, muri);
  • observation and analytical skills;
  • coaching and communication;
  • the ability to distinguish facts from assumptions.
