The Scrum Team

Scrum works so well thanks to clear roles, where everyone involved knows exactly what their responsibilities are. This ensures focus, collaboration, and a clear division of tasks, allowing your team to work more efficiently and deliver value faster. The three core roles are:

  • Product Owner: Represents the voice of the customer and determines the priorities on the Product Backlog.
  • Scrum Master: Facilitates the Scrum process, removes impediments, and coaches the team.
  • Development Team: Works in a self-organizing manner to deliver the working product.

How large is a Scrum Team?

As a rule, a Scrum Team consists of approximately 10 people or fewer. It is advisable to have exactly one Product Owner and exactly one Scrum Master , so that their responsibilities are clear. The Development Team is typically a multidisciplinary group of 3 to 9 developers . This size is large enough to have the necessary skills, but also small enough to remain agile.

What makes a Scrum Team so special?

A Scrum Team is characterized by self-organization and shared responsibility. Instead of a hierarchical top-down approach, the team collectively decides how to tackle their work. This way of working fosters engagement and allows room for creativity and growth. At Spark Academy, we often hear that people value this autonomy because it motivates them to continuously improve their collaboration.

Shared Responsibility

Although the Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Development Team have distinct roles, they collectively bear responsibility for the final outcome. They collaborate closely, exchange feedback regularly, and make joint decisions on priorities and approach. This makes all team members feel a sense of co-ownership of the product or project, leading to a higher level of commitment, energy, and quality.
